Come Away

antonio6In the Gospel of Mark, we read, “‘Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a little.’ People were coming and going in great numbers, making it impossible for them even to eat” (6:31).

The “people coming and going in great numbers” are like the many thoughts and feelings which enter and pass through our minds and hearts, distracting and disturbing our peace so that it is almost impossible for us to “eat,” that is, to find some time to savour the food of eternal life and to enjoy the delights of divine contemplation.

Our solicitous Master told us to come away by ourselves, away from the maddening crowd to a lonely place, where we can find peace and quiet for body and soul.
